The SFFMC campout will once again be in the redwoods at the Boulder Creek Scout Reservation, near Boulder Creek (off Hwy. 9, south of Big Basin State Park, on Bear Creek Road-- the same place as last year's Labor Day and this year's July 4 campouts.) Please register early; the ranger wants an approximate advance count of attendees. (Click here for a printable registration form.) We'll send a confirmation letter and directions after you register. If you have friends who are interested in folk music, please invite them to come to this campout. It is not necessary to be a member of the SFFMC to attend the campout. We usually have plenty of room. There are tent spaces and eight tent cabins with cots, plus parking for RVs.
The day use fee is $5.00.
RVs park in the parking lot unless otherwise directed by the Ranger.
We would like to revive the workshop tradition at summer campouts. Anyone can lead a workshop. All you need to do is to set up a bulletin board like the one at Camp Harmony--a large board or piece of cardboard with marked days and time slots. List your workshop with the subject, the leader's name, and the place, e.g. in the kitchen, around the pool, etc. Just set up the bulletin board at camp near registration, or some other central area. Let people at the registration desk know where it is.
The parking lot has been enlarged to hold about 95 vehicles, which should help with parking space. We must park in the parking lot and are not allowed to drive into campsites. Two or three cars at a time will be allowed through the gate, near sites, but not into them -- to unload and reload after camp. Do not drive off the paved road without permission. There are hand carts for carrying gear to campsites. Pack light!
SFFMC volunteers will register campers and direct parking; please follow their directions. Back vehicles into spaces after unloading.
We need everyone over 12 years old to do an hour of camp duty: registration and parking, cleanup after the potluck, or cleanup of camp on the last day. We always need parking lot volunteers -- especially on Saturday afternoon and Monday morning-- the morning we leave. Final camp cleanup includes the kitchen, restrooms and litter patrol. These jobs are essential, and we always need volunteers for them! Please sign up for them at the registration desk as soon as you can after arriving. And please show up for your chore. If you can't, leave a note at the registration desk so we can cover the time.
Help us fill the following jobs in advance: e-mail or
Early arrivals: (check-in is 2:00 p.m. the first day) can help post signs, register and direct parking.
Registration supervisors: preferably people who have done registration before.
Cleanup coordinator: preferably someone who has done cleanup before.
Neighbors are directly across Bear Creek, so try to keep singing and talking quiet after 10:00 p.m.. Keep any circles that will go later than 10:00 p.m. as far from Bear Creek as possible.
SFFMC T-shirts will be on sale at the registration table. Price: $15.00 each, blue or maroon in various sizes. See the March/April 2005 folknik for more T-shirt details.
Potluck dinner for all at the dining area outside the camp kitchen on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. and a concert in the amphitheater afterwards. You may store potluck food in the kitchen's fridge or freezer until the dinner. Label your food, and do not leave anything in the refrigerator or freezer when you leave camp. The deadline to retrieve food will be posted -- it's usually about 11:00 a.m.on the last day. We can use the stoves, pots and pans, serving dishes and utensils, etc. in the kitchen. Bring your own plates and silverware; disposable suggested. Sorry, there's no dish washing machine.
We plan to have a lifeguard for Saturday and Sunday. The days and hours will be announced at camp. Watch for a poster at the pool or registration table.
"Pack it in, pack it up." At camp's end, bag trash from your campsite's garbage can and carry it to the ranger's trailer near the maintenance shed (across from the kitchen; look for signs). Use plastic bags hanging from the trash cans in your campsite. Check the kitchen for extra bags (in one of the drawers with the cleaning supplies) or check the men's restroom near the dining hall). Bottles and cans may be recycled in the appropriate bins; some are near the kitchen building.
Camp Harmony will be Wednesday, December 27, 2006 through Monday, January 1, 2007 at its usual place near Boulder Creek in the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains. If you have a paper folknik, turn it over and check your mailing label. (If you don't have a paper folknik, you probably aren't a member.) If your subscription expires in the next few months, renew your membership now (only $10/year) to be sure you receive the next issue with the Harmony Registration form. You must be a member of SFFMC to register for Camp.
Changes in fuel prices will have a major impact on the cost of camp this year and the committee has been trying to find ways to keep prices as low as possible. For a start, those who register early and come for the full 5 days will have a big advantage over weekend visitors and those who register after November 1. Plan now to join your musical friends at New Years and set aside a few vacation days so you can take advantage of the better rate for full camp. We will have some Campership funds available to all campers who need them, on a first-come-first-served basis. If you are flush this year, please consider donating to this fund. There will be a place on the Harmony registration form to make a contribution, or you can send an extra check to SFFMC. Please mark it "Camp Harmony Donation."
Remember, all donations to SFFMC are tax deductible.
The camp shuttle bus will be back again! It was a big success, and we are keeping its extended hours and days of operation.
We look forward to seeing you all for New Year's 2007.
